Kohl's Consumer Style: Priced to Deliver Value

As you look around for gifts for Mom, and for new styles, check out Kohl's.  I'm continually impressed by their promotions and Kohl's cash savings.  Plus, I like what their CMO says about delivering value to customers.  That and Simply Vera :)
“Value remains critical as consumers continue to look for ways to stretch budgets further this season,” said Julie Gardner, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Kohl’s Department Stores. “By providing more opportunities to save on the brands they love, consumers can shop Kohl’s and Kohls.com with confidence, knowing they are getting the best value on summer fashion and home essentials.”

Here's a few style tips from Kohl's on Summer/Spring dressing.

  1. Glamazon: Rich textured fabric and metallic details are the trends to watch in apparel and accessories this season. From textured and embroidered fabrics to metallic treatments on handbags and heels, Kohl’s makes it easy and affordable to incorporate a little luxury into any summer ensemble. Get the look: Simply Vera Vera Wang tote ($65.00), Apt. 9® metallic cuff ($14.99), Candie’s® Strutter wedge sandal ($54.99)
  2. Fiery fuchsia and orange: Try saturated colors this season to add new life to summer looks. Experiment with the trend by incorporating a layering piece in citrus or a full-length fuchsia maxi dress. Get the look: LC Lauren Conrad zipper-front tank ($40.00) So® glitter cork sandals ($16.00), Mudd® horn-rimmed sunglasses ($10.00), ELLE™ shirred maxi dress ($60.00)
  3. Sporty-utility: Classic sportswear gets an edgy look this season with utility-inspired embellishments including hardware details, roll-tabs and straps. To try the trend wear a studded tee, cuffed denim shorts or sport a handbag accented with zipper details. Get the look: LC Lauren Conrad romper ($48.00), Helix™ canvas cargo shorts ($44.00), Hang Ten studded tank top ($16.99)
  4. Shorts and skirts: Hemlines are on the rise this season. Short-shorts and mini skirts are a must-have for summer and Kohl’s offers a deep selection of the trend for less. Create a casual daytime look with destructed and bleached denim or dress up for evening with a sophisticated mini. Get the look: ELLE™ destructed denim mini ($40.00), Hang Ten acid wash shorts ($34.99), LC Lauren Conrad mini ($44.00)
  5. Accessories: Easily and affordably incorporate the summer’s best accessories for less at Kohl’s and Kohls.com. Add a bold cuff bracelet, metallic handbag or embellished sandal to make basic looks trend-right at a great price. Get the look: Simply Vera Vera Wang small chain hobo ($49.00), Apt. 9 bold cuff ($20.00)

ArtLumiere to Illuminate the Beverly Wilshire April 19 - 25,

Pictured: The History Channel's "America, The Story of Us" campaign is projected onto the front of The Beverly Wilshire Hotel on April 17th, 2010 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Kevin Parry/Getty Images)

If you're looking for unique things to do in Los Angeles this week, you might want to check out the Public Art Light Installation by ArtLumiere that will be shown on the facade of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. From April 19 - 25, passersby on Rodeo Drive will be treated to a series of projections of American History on the hotel's exterior from Dusk to 11:00 pm. The light show is expected to continuously run in loops of 6 minutes. Above is a sneak peak at what the grand old Beverly Wilshire will look like this week.

The public art event will celebrate America's past and promote AMERICA THE STORY OF US, an epic 12-hour television event spanning 400 years of American history. The show will premiere on HISTORY on Sunday, April 25, 9pm ET/PT with new episodes airing on Sundays through Memorial Day. The light display will be viewable in front of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel each evening beginning at sundown until the April 25 television premiere.

The historical images were hand painted by ArtLumiere. The images are designed to be vibrant and clear, giving the impression the building has been painted with scenes from American history. The advanced projection technology used to create the effect was invented and used exclusively by ArtLumiere, a New York-based company created by French-born artist Lucette de Rugy.

In addition to Los Angeles, similar light projections will display this week in Washington DC at Union Station and in New York City at Grand Central station. If you're interested in viewing the Los Angeles light show, the best views maybe from across the street at the restaurants on Two Rodeo like McCormick & Schmick's and 208 Rodeo. The light show is free and open to the public. Combine the free show with one of the Happy Hour deals from the Two Rodeo restaurants and you have an affordable and arty evening out.

Spa Week is on until April 18th, featuring $50.00 Spa Treatments

In case you haven't heard, Spa Week is here, and there are just a few days left! Spa Week is a week when some spas are making $50.00 treatments available to customers.  That is a  nice savings on a facial, masssage or other treatment. PTL (praise the lord)  I say. Spa Week arrives just in time for the payment of property taxes, state taxes and federal income taxes.  All due this week.  All dreadful and stressful.  I definitely need to check in somewhere and try to relax and forget the taxman.   If you are interested in taking advantage of discounted spa rates, check the Spaweek.com website to find out where the deals are near you.  Deals are offered in the US, Canada and worldwide.  Just check the website to find out where.  Thanks to Dove for sponsoring SpaWeek.  I am a great admirer of their "Real Beauty" campaign and how real women of all shapes and sizes are featured.  We need more advertisements like this. To learn more, visit campaignforrealbeauty.com. To get busy with the spa savings, click here to check all the spa deals, giveaways, offers for brides and more.

Anna Getty's Easy Green Organic offers Delicious and Economical Fare

Pictured: The cover of Anna Getty's cookbook, "Easy Green Organic."  (cover image courtesy of Chronicle books.)

This week I had the pleasure of attending the launch party for Anna Getty's new cookbook called "Easy Green Organic."  I never know what to expect when I hear the label organic cooking.  Will that mean tofu that is overly flavored and dry or just lots of leafy greens thrown together in a salad?  I'm happy to report that Anna Getty makes organic cooking delicious and flavorful.  Flavorful is the key ingredient here. I can say that with assurance since this book party included samplings of the recipes from the book.  Guests feasted on arugula and strawberry salad with lemon vinaigrette dressing, tofu with soba noodles in an Asian flavored sauce plus sliced goat cheese frittata on crostini and delicious cookies.  Anna Getty's cooking is the type you return to the buffet table for to eat another helping. I had the opportunity to chat with Anna at the signing and ask her about how she cooks, and how she formulated her delicious recipes.

Pictured: The author, Anna Getty, as she signs her cookbook.  (Photo: Maggie Read)

Anna tells me her recipes are a thoughtful mix of her tastes, organic finds from local farmer's markets,  family recipes and her cross checking ingredients with complimentary tastes from a book called Culinary Artistry. It took her two years to put together her collection of organic recipes, perfect them and bring them to market in her new cookbook Easy Green Organic.  I asked Anna, is it more expensive to cook organic? Surprisingly, she says its actual more economical.  "With the exception of truffles, most of the recipes in the book are inexpensive to make.  Dishes like pasta, polenta and soups can be reasonably made," says Anna. She also notes, " I buy my produce at the local farmer's market which is actually cheaper than shopping at the grocery store."  Beyond the delicious recipes, Easy Green Organic also features tips on how to green your kitchen to use healthy cooking utensils (for example: safe, non-coated pots and pans) and how to eliminate items from your pantry that may not have the nutrients you need to help you live a healthy lifestyle. One recipe that I am looking forward to tasting from the book is the Fried Polenta with Sauteed Wild Mushrooms and Chipotle Cream Sauce.  The book party event featured organic cocktails mixed with Coconut water, 360 organic vodka and Frey organic winery.  There were even healthy, organic, 70% dark chocolates from Nicobella chocolates.

If you live in Los Angeles, you might want to make a trip to the site of Anna's book party, Rolling Greens nursey in West Hollywood on Beverly Dr.  Rolling Greens offers an amazing collection of plants, flowers, shabby chic furnishings and books.  It was the perfect setting for an eco-friendly event.  Check out the picture below, and you will see this is not your typical nursery.  Anna also received support from her actor brother Balthazar Getty who was in attendance.

To learn more about organic living, check out Anna Getty's cookbook.  Its well priced at $24.95 and features beautiful photographs of all the dishes by Dan Goldberg.  I like to look at the pictures to decide what looks most appetizing before investing cooking time!

ebay's New Fashion Microsite

Looking for some fabuless deals? Then you might want to take a look at eBay's new fashion microsite. I've long shopped for fashion and designer brands on eBay, and now, they've made my life easier by aggregating everything into one site, http://fashion.ebay.com.  This is good news for buyers as well as sellers.  The centralized location should make it easier for all of us to wonder around the world's biggest consignment store. The site has stuff for women, men, babies plus vintage finds.  Its also sortable by brand names.  Check it out and let me know what you think.  This is perfect timing, as I need to do some spring cleaning, list some items for sale, and move on into the new!

You're Invited to be a Jones New York VIP: Come to Macy's South Coast Plaza + Get Swoozy with Lloyd Boston!

Pictured: The new Jones New York Swoozy is a good reason to come out to an exclusive JNY event at Macy's in the OC on April 10th (Photo courtesy of Jones New York)

Don't you love this Black and White striped wrap pictured above? Its the new versatile topper, the Jones New York "Swoozy." I just got a beautiful sample Swoozy last week from Jones New York to review, and I have to give it a big thumbs up.  Spring hasn't exactly sprung here in Southern California and there have been some harsh winds here.  The Swoozy has been a great way to keep the chill away, while not getting too bundled up. The Swoozy is the perfect wrap for in between weather, since its 60% Cotton and 40% Rayon. The blended fabric makes it fairly wrinkle resistant.   Last week at the Hollywood Bowl during the McCartney concert, it was so cold Macca asked the crowd, "Did you bring your wolly polly? "  I wanted to say, "No Paul, I got my Swoozy!" I've dressed it up for dinner, or worn it out with jeans to run errands for a bit of extra warmth. Where can you get this lovely fashion piece? While its available at Macy's and on JNY.com.  Now, if you want to learn all the ways to wear the Swoozy, who better to talk to than JNY style expert, Lloyd Boston.  Lloyd, author of  Before You Put That On: 365 Daily Style Tips for Her will be at Macy's South Coast Plaza April 10th, and you're invited. Here are the details.

Who: Join Lloyd Boston, style editor to NBC's Today Show and Jones New York's exclusive style guy, as he presents Spring’s How To Wear It philosophies, from desk to dinner, work to weekends and everything in between!

What: Enjoy a fashion presentation, personal style appointments with Lloyd, and receive a gift * with your Jones New York purchase of $100 or more (*while supplies last). Watch and learn from the style expert as he discusses:
  • Dressing for your shape
  • Corner office style
  • Special occasions
  • When to let go of old wardrobe pieces and what to add

When: Saturday, April 10th, 2:00PM

Where: Macy’s South Coast Plaza (Women’s Bldg, Level 1)
3333 S. BRISTOL ST, Costa Mesa, CA, 92626
RSVP for the event: 877-884-3751

So call the Lloyd hot line at Macy's now, and reserve your place.  Nothing like some great style tips from a guru like Lloyd!

First Look: Eugenia Kim and Cynthia Vincent for Target

Pictured: Eugenia Kim for Target hats.

Here's a sneak peak at the new accessory designers coming to Target soon (April 18th.)  The new collections feature cool hats and cute spring shoes from designers Eugenia Kim (hats) and Cynthia Vincent (shoes).  Take a peak and see what you think.  The hats look very retro to my eye. The Eugenia Kim for Target collection is the first hat launch from Target. The styles are inspired by Havana , Cuba. The collection includes cloche, fedora, sun-hat, bucket hat, newsboy and pillbox silhouettes using woven and printed fabrics with various embellishments.

Pictured: The Target version of Cynthia Vincent's top-selling gladiator wedge sandal in yellow will be $29.99.  Fashionable, but is it easy to walk in? Don't sacrifice your soles for your fashion soul.

Pictured: Cynthia Vincent for Target sandals, heels and flats.

The Cynthia Vincent for Target collection reinvents Vincent’s renowned style by updating with embellishments and hardware. There are wedges, flats and gladiator sandals in a range of bright and classic hues, all designed to show plenty of "toe cleavage"  for spring and summer.

I will have to see this in-store.  Right now, I'm not under the budget fashion spell of either collection. What do you think?

Just in time for Easter: New Stella McCartney for GapKids

Stella McCartney's new line for boys, girls and infants just arrived at Gap stores.  The line is cute and colorful, although not exactly budget priced.  A sun dress is $58.00.  As with the previous Stella collections, the girls line owes much to vintage styles, with drop waist shirts and some Edwardian style dresses.  The boys collection features cute ink spot print style tees and plenty of bright colors.  Overall, the line is adorable and very age appropriate.  Its available at select Gap stores and online, so get it while you can.  The last Stella line sold out.
